Photographing the only active Dutch astronaut in such a way that it looks like he's floating through space? This is a typical job of Regime. Nothing is impossible. Thanks to Chris van Diemen from the Taken By Storm bureau we were tasked with the challenge of capturing André Kuipers in his (un)natural habitat. After a short Skype brainstorm session we came up with the solution: to build a vertical studio at the Rotterdam Maritime Museum where an exhibition featuring André was being held.
Together with our very capable intern Max we left with a car filled with photo equipment for Rotterdam where we used a scissor platform lift to build this one of a kind temporary studio. By custom building a special tripod with bike seat for added comfort we were able to create the illusion of weightlessness. After that we were allowed access to some very special historic pieces on display at the museum and shot them in a similar way, creating this main image of the exhibition.
